VOLUNTEER REFLECTIONS… Marian Waterhouse: Volunteer since 7/92 At Sisters Care, I am frequently introduced to visitors as a "valuable volunteer." They usually respond by saying something about how fortunate Sisters Care is to have me. I have a classic answer to such remarks: "Sisters Care has done and is doing far more for me than I could ever do for them." Why does Sisters Care continue to be such a fulfilling ministry for me? Why do I drive to work each day with enthusiasm and anticipation? I have grown to love all the beautiful Sisters and other caregivers with whom I work. I have learned by their example that by giving, I receive. Doing God's work has made me feel much better about myself Therefore, by volunteering at Sisters Care, I have found a peace that I have never had before. Sister LaVon Kampf-Caregiver since 3/92 For ten years I have been drawn into the lives of many adults, as I minister in Sisters Care. Not only have I been drawn into their lives, but I have been quite involved with their children, neighbors and friends. I feel I have learned about myself more in this ministry than in any other that I have had. Time has taken on a different meaning. I have found that it is okay to be late, if the rain delays me, because my client wants me to arrive safely. My clients have confided worries and joys that even my own family hasn't shared with me. They have trusted me even though they have experienced a lack of trust in their lives. They have stretched me to do typing, sewing and cooking -tasks I have not done for a while. They have asked my advice even though I am much younger. They have shared experiences with me that have given me a new perspective on living and dying. I have been enriched rather than drained by this ministry. And as I have never experienced before, I have been so warmly appreciated. I feel that I am the winner in this ministry and I've learned so much! Sister Mary F. O'Driscoll, Caregiver since 3/92. "Give thanks to the Lord, for He is good; His love is everlasting" (Psalm 106:1) Ten years ago, I had no idea that I would be in a ministry that involved caring for the elderly in their homes. I had been in the education field for thirty years, including eight years as principal of an elementary school. While attending an information meeting about a new ministry in San Antonio called Sisters Care, I was immediately drawn to it. With the support of my Congregation, I was able to participate in this beautiful ministry and four years later I'm still here. Working with the elderly, may seem to be a very sad, depressing job, but the opposite is true. It seems that as life passes priorities become more sound and clear for the elderly. Reality and common sense are very much in focus. It is so refreshing to come into contact with people who have Faith, family, sharing, and caring as high priorities. There is Ethel whose caring for others is evident in her simplicity of life style. Katherine who can look back and thank God for His goodness to her, including Sisters Care. Maria Elena who cared for her invalid daughter for over forty years and now can let go for the greater good. Lupe who is overjoyed because she has gotten her diabetes under control. Kathleen whose faith is evident - in her strength and beautiful smile which makes her a friend of all. Maria whose joy and sense of humor are contagious. Yes, God's love is everlasting and He is good, during this beautiful season of thanksgiving, how could I be anything but grateful.
